Product Description

Project Length: 1 week
Project Instructions: Rainbow Fire project

Most people think fire is yellow. But that isn’t always true. Sure, our sun looks yellow as it burns, but there are other stars in our universe that are not yellow. Why are they different colors? And what does that tell us about their composition? Use this physics science fair kit to find out!

With this physics kit you will explore the basics of quantum mechanics and see how astronomers can determine the atomic composition of distant stars by measuring the spectrum of light emitted by the star. Using a procedure that is similar to flame photometry, you will observe the color of light produced when various chemical compounds are burned.

This kit includes hard-to-find chemicals that are potentially harmful. You'll need an adult to help you with this experiment, and you will have to perform the experiment extremely carefully so that the flames stay small and under control.

This kit follows the procedures from the Science Buddies physics project Rainbow Fire.
